Last week's question of whether or not to use Bar Leak for heater core problem no longer a concern. Coming home from mall on Sunday afternoon was struck head-on by out of control SUV (KIA) that skidded on ice, crossed center line into Saab path. At same time was struck from rear by a following Pontiac.
Walked away with what appear to be bruises - seat belts, air bags & crumple zones worked as designed. Damage to SUV looked minor in comparison, same with Pontiac - think Saab absorbed enough force to lesson damage even to other vehicles. Front and rear of CSE both damaged, roof buckled - left front severly damaged - it's a "total".
If deal w/insurance co. is fair thinking of:
1) Using ECU & appropriate turbo parts (hoses, brackets) from 98CSE(67K) for 96 CS(118K), which own. Have an experienced shop to go to but would like to know if there would be any big stumbling blocks in doing such a job? Have seen at least one BB warning about ECUs from different model years. Will this ECU work without major problems - i.e. wiring, etc.?
2) 96CS (for those who remember) had engine problems last year from oil system failure that left engine with noisy valve lifters and likely clogged oil passages in head. Engine was cleaned and is today otherwise sound and no apparent loss of power; but still noisy and worrisome. Would like to fix this lifter/oil system problem - noise is from top, no apparent lower/bearing noise.
Wondering if best approach would be to a) switch head & lifters from 98 to 96 - least expensive option/less potential problems; or b) switch engines - more expensive with potential unseen costs?
Many thanks to Saab engineers. Was in head-on collision 30+ years ago in which injuries were severe - much different this time.
