Okay, here's a brief rundown of the litanny of troubles on my 88 9000 Turbo hatchback with a little under 120K miles on it. Most of them are little things.
1-dashboard lights/horn don't work. This includes the computer. I tried changing out fuses at one point, which solved the problem briefly, but they all died quickly.
2- rear door won't open. It will unlock, but the door won't open from the inside or out. I don't know if it's some crazy child safety latch or what.
3- wiper blades have gone haywire. The dirver side one just lays there. The passenger side one tries to compensate by going all the way over to the driver side. it's the strangest thing I've ever seen. I don't know if it's the motor or what. The screws move, but the blades don't do what they're supposed to.
4- auto sun roof doesn't want to open anymore. Not a problem in the dead of winter, but...
5- some kind of timing issue causes it to stall out when you slowdown. Not all the time, but there are times when I downshift, take my foot off the gas, and as I release the clutch it stalls. I've read that it is could be a valve at the intake manifold. Or it could be the timing chain. I'm assuming the worst. The car runs, but that stalling thing is bad.
6- leather seat stiching is coming undone along one of the seams in the seat. I want it fixed before the whole thing comes apart.
7- possibly need new brakes. They seem to work fine, but a mechanic who replaced the alternator a year ago told me he thought I had about 5,000 miles left on them. I'm approaching that mark.
So....I bought the car in Chicago two years ago from a Saab lover who partiicpates in this forum (hi, Andy). The car had been maintained as well as anyone could ask for. Despite it's current ills, I love the car. I just think that it's reaching a stage where little things (and maybe big things) are going to need attention.
I paid $4000 for it then, and fully repaired I might be able to get around that for it (haven't really checked). I've sort of decided that if I can spend $1000 get the car in good shape for another couple of years it's worth it.
My question is two-fold. Am I high as a Georgia pine (first year contracts reference) for thinking I can get these things fixed for a grand? I really have no idea. Second, where should I go? I now live in Manhattan. I've read about good mechanics in Brooklyn and Edgewater, NJ. Finding someone who's open on a Saturday is tough around here.
Thanks in advance.
