I havn't done the steering rack, thought I really should have on my old, departed '87 9kT. I believe that you actually could remove the rack from either driver's or passenger's side wheel well by removing the fender liner and then unbolting the rack from the subframe - this much I can imagine - so to do that you'd have to put car on stands, then remove: wheels, fender liners, tie rod ends, power steering hoses, and maybe the connections holding the anti sway bar to the swing arms (trying to recall from memory). Then I think you'd simply remove the bolts that hold the rack to the subframe and uncouple the steering gear - after that slide the rack out either passenger or driver's side wheel well (I assume driver's side would be easier)
There is of course NO REASON to remove the rack unless it is locking up (as mine was) or leaking severely. The advantage you'd have if the transmission was out of the car is that a fair number of the bolts would be much easier to access - perhaps though you like snuggleing up underneath the car? It was always satasfying to get out from under the car - Those were the times I really felt like I had accomplished something.
A new rack means new tie rod ends and a front alignment - you'd do well to replace ball joints (and perhaps swing arm bushings, sway bar bushings, shocks) with the new tie rod ends as I believe (don't know) that new BJ's require an alignment (heard this is the case on c900's - this is hearsey - NOT reliable.
So how much of the front suspension do you want to replace??? There's always something else you could replace.
good luck,
NT
