If you make few short trips--i.e., oil is always allowed to heat up to operating temp (>180°F) prior to extended shutdown--and don't drive in dusty conditions, you could go 10k or more with synthetic oil. If you're running fossil oil I'd stick with your present regimen, or change three times every 10k (~3300) to make it easy to keep track of.
Stephen's suggestion to perform a lab test is a good idea. I did it twice on my '95 Aero, once at 5k and again at 10k. Using synthetic oil both showed that viscosity and TSN (indication of acid-absorption capacity) were fine, and wear metals were very low. As a result of these tests I now change the oil and filter every 10k. I use 15w40 Royal Purple year- round in this moderate climate (Baton Rouge), and a top-grade filter (Delco UPF-53, no longer being made, and recently changing to Pure-One). Mobil 1 also makes an excellent synthetic-fiber filter.
Road & Track Magazine suggests 3k intervals for fossil oil and 10-15k for synthetic, based on a recommendation given in their Technical Correspondence column several years ago.
