Although the 200 bhp engine with automatic transmission has reduced power and torque compared with the Aero manual, it still makes for an extremely fast car and the acceleration is very accessible on a "point and squirt" basis. My CSE has a 3" exhaust and this enhances the effect, but basically, small throttle openings give great results and the driving becomes a relaxed experience, with the knowledge that if you want to ovetake, you just do it. Unless you are driving the manual Aero flat out, I doubt if there's much difference in real-world performance.

I like the four-speed ZF automatic, with three reservations. The first is long-term reliability but you can trawl the board for opinions that.

The second is that the stick movements are short and (unlike with the Mercedes box for instance) there is no detent to stop you going straight from third, through drive into neutral, so if like me you like to hold third on winding roads, you have to take care shoving it back into drive.

Third reservation is down to the power of the car. When leaving roundabouts, for instance, if you add too much throttle you may get an unwanted down-change that can break the front wheels loose, particularly in wet conditions. Applies to any automatic, I suppose.

On the other hand, this gearbox is much more controllable on the throttle than the electronic ones, and lots of things can be fixed on it too. My first 9000 was my first car with automatic transmission - I was brought up on sports cars but am now a complete convert to automatics.
