...wheel speed sensors. They sometimes don't see the wheel spinning while it's turning slow, so the ABS kick in to avoid to stop the wheel. If the sensor sees the wheel stuck, but sees that you're not bracking, then it reckons there's a fault somewhere and it shut itself off, turning on the "anti-lock" light, and quiting to prevent blocking wheels.
It's usually one of the front sensors the one who fails, they cost around 125$ each, they are different so you can't buy one and see whch one of yours was faulty. I bought a pair for 50 euros when I needed from a scrapped car and they worked fine since.
If you are scared to drive the car like this, you can just disconnect one of the sensors (the connectors are in the acquarium, one per side, at the end). The ABS ECU will see the "fault" you generated and will shut itself off, the anti lock light will be constantly on and you could block wheels, but normal bracking won't be affected and the brake pedal will be quiet.
There are lots of posts here about it, just search for wheel sensor or anti lock light.
Hope this helps.

ps: "glad" to see this happened to newer cars too!
