When I first bought my car, one of my ball-joints was so worn that, with the car jacked up, if I pushed and pulled on the bottom of the left wheel it would actually jiggle about 1/8".
As a result, the steerting became alarmingly shifty when making wide radius right-turns, like on a highway exit ramp. Entering the turn, eveything would feel normal. Then as the turn radius decreased and the load increased on the left tires, the ball would suddenly shift in the socket and WHOA!, the car would "steer" slightly inward.
I never thought I would lose control, but it was still quite disconcerting. Before a mechanic told me it was the ball joint, I thought it was a worn tie rod end, which uses a similar ball in socket design.
The ball-joint connects the wheel hub to the lower control arm, and is highly prone to wear, being the focal point for almost all of the lateral forces created by hard cornering and braking. However, you could drive indefinitely at lower speeds and never notice a worn ball-joint because the weight of the car keeps the ball settled in the bottom of the socket.
Sorry for the long-winded response. Although I could be completely wrong, its probably wirth investigating.
Good Luck!
