Removing balance shaft chain-yes or no?

Spoke with a local shop today about replacing the balance shaft chains and associated parts on my '91 9K turbo. After hitting me with an $1850 estimate, he went on to suggest just removing the chain by dropping the sump and using a chain breaking tool, and pulling the chain out. The other old parts would be left in situ. What are the pros and cons of this procedure, other than the lower price to do it??
