my clutch, flywheel and flex pipe are fine. the balancer was replaced at 140k mi (it's at 204k now).
a balance shafted 2.3 is simply a smoother engine than the previous non-balance shafted 2.0. there's a reason that saab engineers put those shafts in (besides a late life source of revenue for saab mechanics 100k mi down the road), an inline 4 especially one as large as the 2.3 generates a great deal of unwanted harshness and noise. and when they're trying to compete with 6 cyl and 8 cyl in the $35-42k range, the shafts are a good way to add refinement.
the increased vibration at idle is inconsequential but between 2700-3100 rpm it's especially noticeable. does this mean the car is undriveable? absolutely not. it's just not as nice as was before. whether it's worth the extra $$$ is, obviously, a personal decision. for me , it was a mistake- i'd gladly have paid the extra $400+ to have the level of refinement i had before. is it worth paying someone $900-1200 to basically redo the job (which is what i'm toying with)? maybe, maybe not...
