The Valentine is so sensitive, it doesn't make much difference where you mount it, especially given that long gone are the good-ole days before instant-on guns, when the guns were turned on, and left. More often than not, a laser detector - even the Valentine, is only an advance warning of the blue lights will be flashing momentarily - you need more than just a detector.
As for placement, conisder: cops hate the things, jerks with $50 cars will tail you at 100+ mph if they see one. For health reasons, I want it as far away from me as possible (ever here of the cops with testicular cancer, from leaving the guns sitting in their crotches?). Mine is hard-wired, and placed as high as possible behind the passenger side visor (that is, as high up as possible, and I always pull that visor down an inch or so where the detector can not be seen from the rear). Then the remote display is velcroed to the ashtray, which has been drilled to allow passage of the wires.
As for laser - get rid of your license plate. According to Dr. Marwan Nusair (who designed Mike Valentine's dual antennae), they only need 5% reflection back to get a reading.
Get a K40 laser diffuser, in fact, if you can afford it, get two of them, for even more protection (2 ~$700). They work well, at least until about 300 feet. It can be funny experiencing cops frustrated by a K40 - you'll know it by the frantic, multiple zaps you'll get, as they try to get a reading. Meanwhile, you have plenty of time to slow-down.
Here's something interesting: Nusair said that at aproximatey 1,100 feet, the laser detection spread begins to be wider than a standard interstate lane, which means they could be getting you, or someone else.
