The Crank Position Sensor is an electronic device that measures the movement of the crakshaft (RPMs basically). I think it does it with a magnet, measuring each pass of the Harmonic Balancer (which it sits behind).

At >$200, you should be sure that it is the culprit. I like the cold water idea and be aware that if the tach isn't bouncing while cranking it is a sure sign your CPS is shot. When it fails (stops sending its signal), the ECU thinks the crank isn't turning and stops sending fuel and you stall out.

I had a CPS problem and it was quite vexing: when cold the engine started fine. After a few minutes (as the engine heated) the CPS stopped sending and the engine would cut out. It would not start again until cool (no bounce on the tach).

Prior to this repeating pattern I had wild fluctuating idle, but I don't know if they were related (I replaced the IAC snd the DI with no change). My AMM went shortly after I replaced the CPS, so that could have been part of the fluctuating idle.

The good news is that the CPS is pretty standard in the Saab line and I was able to get a used 900 CPS for $50 (the wiring harness is different, so I had to splice it in).

Good luck, hope this info helps.
