I assume you mean coolant is disappearing. If it were leaking that much, you'd probably see it on the ground. Therefore, I'm assuming it's going out the exhaust, and that's most likely the head gasket. I would expect that you're seeing a lot of white exhaust, even after the engine is warm.
The only other possible thing would be a bad coolant reservoir cap. It's supposed to keep the system pressurized, but if the cap isn't holding pressure, the coolant will boil, and could be boiling off. But I'd expect you'd find a pretty gummy mess around the cap.
To directly answer your question, a pint of coolant every 50 miles is not normal. But I suspect you knew that.
