All fixed - what I learned about CPS failure mode

The crank wasn't hitting the sensor, the sensor was hitting the sector ring. After making the repair and running the engine up to temp I pulled the harmonic balancer back off to verify that there wasn't any contact.
The CPS for my '93 is different than the one used from '94 to '98. eEuroparts gets about $100 for the newer version but $280 +1wk for mine. I found a used one for $50.
The older CPS has a spring steel clip in the back that holds the plastic coil to the aluminum sensor body. Mine was broken and allowed the coil unit to drag on the sector ring. The dragging generated heat and the heat killed the coil. The loose coil also explains why my car tended to quit after taking a tight corner.
