Magnetic sensor in the door latch. The door ajar sensor is inside the door up by the latch, and is not part of the interior light circuit. You can prove this to yourself by pushing the door switch with your thumb and observing that the door ajar light doesn't go out. I don't know if the sensor is a hall effect sensor or something else, but it works with the striker plate to detect that the door is open or closed. I couldn't get my driver's door ajar indicator to go out after I fixed the door latch. (The usual, the door got harder and harder to open because the tab on the handle had deformed over the years.) I fooled around with the sensor for a couple of hours and finally had to disconnect it. If it were one of the passenger doors, I don't think I would make that decision.
