I picked up some contact cleaner from Radio Shack. It's a little spray can with a tube.
Remove the relay, and spray the socket it plugged into with the contact cleaner. This way it'll have plenty of time to dry before you come back. Take the realy and pop the cover off. This requires a little prying at the tabs on the base. Spray the contacts with the cleaner. I like following it up by taking a piece of fine sandpaper - like 400 grit - and placing it between the contacts (two sets), holding the contacts closed with my finger, and pulling the sandpaper free. You're just trying to knock off the carbon buildup, not sand it down to a nub. Make sure none of the sandpaper breaks off in there, or if it does, just make sure it comes out. I also brighten up the lugs on the relay with some find sandpaper or Scotchbrite. Once the spray dries, reassemble, and you're good to go.
