Just sharing this in case someone else has a funky clutch thing happen...

My clutch pedal action was not great when I got the car - less actual
length of the active part of the pedal stroke than I have ever had,
and too much free play, as well as an oddly high top position.

Then the action got smaller and smaller and after consulting with my
trusted indy it was decided that since the clutch had been replaced
by the PO, it must be the master - which I was told was original.

Got one from EEuroparts with the usual amazing quickness, and my indy
installed it and bled it very carefully.
More active response after that, but not a full pedal, and the same
too-high top position - all attributed to age, and we agreed it was
best if I tried it out for a while to see if it stayed better...

It didn't, and upon examination, I found that the CC switch was
bent way up, and not making contact any longer.
Brought the car back, and it turned out the pedal bushing was worn
from a cylinder to an oblong, and a used pedal was installed, and
system re-bled.
The CC switch was also bent to where it belonged, which is
apparently also the upper stop for the pedal.

GREAT CLUTCH ACTION !!! A full pedal, terrific !

Until morning - then none at all, and a puddle beneath, boo hoo.

Flatbed time - got a new slave cyl, and my indy put it in and bled
it and so on.

Now the clutch action is just right, and he was able to confirm
that the disc/p. plate were fit to continue for some time.

Here is how the ills really stacked up:

The pedal being too high was over-extending the master pushrod/piston
which may have caused an air leak and premature failure;
The pedal free play exagerated this and gave less downward push;
The new, fully active master apparently finished off the weak slave
cyl....

The moral of this story:
Old cars wear in funny places - be sure and look things over well !!

I love my old car better than I could any new one though.
