Look at ball joints and tie-rod ends, although 85K seems a bit early for those to go. Still, stuff happens.
I just had my two 9Ks run through their annual safety inspection and I watched as my indy checked the ball joints, tie rod ends, the lower control arm bushings and the vertical links on the front sway bar. He leaned on all of them with a 3 foot pry bar. He checked the rear sway bar bushings as well, and noted that I had poly on my '96.
ANY of these items can make your steering feel looser. I found doing the rear bushings made a noticeable difference in the handling and feel. And one bad ball joint or tie-rod end can definitely make a car fee wrong at highway speeds.
Have that stuff checked and maybe do an alignment if your old tires weren't wearing evenly.
Also, remember that an '03 Mazda is lighter, has a shorter wheelbase and has a different suspension than the 9000, so you are comparing quite different cars. The steering ratio itself is probably different, too, and you can't really do much about that.
