I'm guessing the non-mechancially inclined owner meant Direct Ignition (DI) module. It combines coil packs distributor etc into one easy to change thing. They are prone to fail, so that could be the problem. About $200-300 from an online parts source. The fuel pump could have died also. Based on the mileage on the car, it could be either. I had a fuel pump go at 155k, DI cassettes at ~95k on two cars. One of the failures was just progressively worse misfiring over a period of two days.
The other thought I had was the timing chain-easy to diagnose- just pull the valve cover off & see if it's still there. The 91-92s had some issue with weak chains-one one of our cars I caught it just before the chain broke-one side plate was gone on a weak link! (Sounded like a diesel, thats why I thought of it)
Fortunately, you came here, so you have help in this endeavor.. From my experience, best bets for parts are Sobstory (800-583-0370), and eEuroparts (http://www.eeuroparts.com). Euro does free shipping over $50 & has an online shopping setup, but you get personalized service/advice & just as good or better prices from Jim at Sobstory.
Euro sells a cheap Haynes manual for the 9000 which will help.
