Thanks for good info. Today, first I looked at the oil to see if it looked "chocolate milkshake". Nope, looked fine, just plain oil. I drove the car 15 miles to a good Saab guy. No skipping or any sign of power loss. Open the hood, nothing happening, no coolant loss, system is well warmed up but the cap is holding fine. "Nothing wrong with this cap, it's holding the pressure fine". Took cap off, "it even looks new". Looks for bubbles in coolant, no, looks fine. He asked how my dash heat gauge behaved on the way over. It had gradually risen to about 10 o'clock, then backed off to about 8:30 and remained steady. He said a typical head gasket problem sign is if the gauge goes rapidly up and down. No. What about doing a pressure test, I ask. He went into a ramble I couldn't understand, but the gist was yes he could do it but it wouldn't be prudent if there is any head gasket problem. At this point I'm all for prudence because there's no way I can put a grand into this car now or ever. If the gasket blows down the road I do have AAA to be rescued, but I don't want any damage just sitting in a garage testing the pressure
Drove the 15 miles home, car running fine. Opened the hood, nothing happening, no fluid loss. I guess this points to my having not screwed the cap on right, before it overflowed through the cap. But that doesn't explain why the reservoir was empty to begin with. So, still stumped, crossing fingers.
