May need to sell it then, ouch Posted by rob [Email] (#1828) [Profile/Gallery] (more from rob) on Thu, 9 Feb 2006 05:45:27 In Reply to: Bad HG if you have that much pressure, Barry, Fri, 27 Jan 2006 19:12:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Barry,
Over the phone two knowledgeable mechanics have said it's almost surely the head gasket, for a c.$1500 fix, ouch! I love the car and if it were only a few years younger I'd probably try to raise the dough. But I'm at the end of my tether on it, and worry that Murphy's hanging around. This coolant thing all started a few weeks ago a mile out the door from buying 4 new tires. After this new fix, what's next, the AT going? Here's a bit of history, how I might try to position the car to the general public, EXCEPT THAT I NEED TO ADD INFO ABOUT THIS COOLANT PROBLEM. MODERATOR, please don't flag this as 'should be a classified', I don't even know if I'm selling it, or an asking price:
1989 Saab 9000 2.0l Turbo 5-door hatchback, 123,495 miles
fast, luxurious, huge interior, handles great, no dents, good paint, fm stereo cassette with equalizer, black leather in good condition, ergonomic power seats, pw, pdl, cruise, fog lights, rear window defroster, automatic climate control
Bought in december 2004 with 116898 miles, so 6597 miles put on, and during that time, it's had:
NEW
four brand new falkex ziex ultra performance all-season tires, consumer reports rated #1, at 123,047, so 448 miles on them!
alignment

radiator
heater core and hoses
distributor cap, rotor, seal
spark plugs and ignition wires
fuel pump ("pre-pump", in tank)
left front axle
turbo bypass valve
right front engine mount
hood and hatch struts
power antenna
timing chain
valve cover gasket
air filter
fuel filter
fuel line o-rings
pcv hoses, o-rings, nipple, bushing
USED items installed
air mass meter
power window regulator
Known problems
ac not working, may just need charge
noisy blower fan, controller stuck on high
sunroof is now manual-only (motor works but only moves it an inch)
sagging headliner but tacks are holding well
small rust just starting behind front wheels
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So you can see I've put a lot in, just getting 6600 miles out of the deal. I have around $4000 into this car, total purchase and repairs, to only get 6600. I keep having one problem after another, and keep hoping the last fix will be really the last for another 20K miles, but it's not happening. My sense is that ONLY a Saab mechanic would pay any more than a junk price. I welcome (and need!) any and all comments about how to handle this.
