12 ft-lbs is way too tight for those fasteners. I made the mistake of believing Haynes, which spec'd them at 16 ft-lbs! Luckily, none of them stripped. Correct torque is around 7, I believe.
Yeah,the slaves are a pain on these cars. Mine went and I had over half the clutch wear left on the original clutch, and that was at about 150k miles.
My slave went because an $.89 o-ring leaked. The reason it leaked is because the clutch slave is the low spot in the hydraulic system and crud and grit accumulated in it, causing the O-ring to wear.
I learned my lesson, I now flush out the clutch hydraulics at least onnce a year.
