I can't speak to the Aeros, but I have a '96 9000 CSE 5 spd and a '03 9-5 Linear wagon.
The 9-5 seems tighter, but part of that might be the difference in a 10 year old car vs. a 3 year old car. The seats in the 9K are better, but on a 6-7 hour drive the 9-5 is still fine. I'd rather be in the 9K, but I'm happy in either. The difference you notice right away is that the 9-5 is much quieter as the NVH levels in the more modern car are much lower.
The wagon is my wife's and I don't drive it a lot, but I like it well enough that if my 9K died I would buy a 9-5.
The challenge at the moment is finding a good 9K with reasonable miles and that has been well maintained. They are still around, but becoming scarce. But they are a great buy if you find one. With a 9-5, you need to get one where you know the maintenance history and can reduce the chances of some typical trouble spots (sludge, PCV, etc.). Personally I prefer '03 to '05 models.
