the feeder(or prepump)is the small external silver unit in the fuel tank that provides fuel to a reservoir(the black round thingy that holds the main pump). when this unit fails, or becomes intermittent, it doesn't provide fuel to the reservoir from which the main pump draws its supply. this is usually not an issue when the tank is full because fuel enters the reservoir from the top overfill hole.
on another note; saab is pretty specific about how the main pump fits into the rubber jacket that holds the pump to the tank. i imagine it has to do with where the filter, that is attached to the prepump, winds up in relation to the tank bottom. the higher the reservoir is in the tank, the higher the fuel level would need to be to supply fuel to the overfill hole if the prepump fails. the haynes manual should have that info if i recall correctly.
