At the time, Saab did not have a synthetic transmission fluid. It was introduced around 1998, and was backwards compatible for at least 1994 and up, and a bulletin for conversion was released. Plenty of 9000 owners have been running synthetic for a long time with no adverse effects. The emphatic statement was against synthetic motor oil in the transmission, not synthetic trans fluid. The distinction had to be made because they were specifying regular motor oil for the transmission. By the way, no 5000km change interval was specified for the trans fluid, or any other interval for that matter.
