Part of what you see is the remains of the brushes. They are basically carbon, and as they wear, will leave carbon around. Also, the serpentine belt will shed small amounts of rubber dust, and the design of the alternator is such as to pull in cooling air, and it'll pull in the rubber dust, too. That and all the other gunk that floats around the engine.
There no fluid to leak from the alternator, and dirt after 150K miles is pretty common.
If you can find an inexpensive rebuilt alternator, I'd replace it, just because getting an alternator in and out is a pain. If you can't find one cheap, or you would rather trade work for money, just replace the VR. As long as the bearings feel good when you spin it by hand, most of what's inside is probably pretty good.
