Change the oil regularly and frequently, and that is the best you can do. Of course, 'frequent' means different things to different people, but somewhere between 3K and 5K is reasonable. I get very uncomfortable with anything over 5K, but that is me. Yes, I know Mobil 1 can go 18 million miles without breaking down, but I like changing the oil to flush out contaminants and particles too small for the filter.
Monitor the oil level - keeping it up near (or slightly over) MAX is good.
Flush your cooling system every few years, and make sure it is working fine.
I've been a bit surprised by the recent rod throwing events (getting ready for the Olympics?) The bottom end of the Saab engine is pretty stout, and I haven't heard of rods being much of an issue in the past. Have there really been a lot, or is it just one or two cases recently?
Bottom line, keep the moving bits lubed, and you should be just fine.
