If the weight of the oil was the same then I would say one or both of the following occured:
Synthetics flow better at cold temperatures. So when your engine is at its worst (cold temp, big clearances), the oil is more fluid and can get by the rings and valve seals.
Synthetics do a better job of keeping the engine clean. It is not unusual that an engine that has run dino oil all its life, and then switched to synthetic, starts to burn oil. The synthetic starts to clean out all those deposits that have been sealing up all the worn parts.
Your synthetic blend may have only had about 10% synthetic in it.
