A malfunctioning DI cassette would not have any relationship to the oil light, no.
Unfortunately, you shouldn't have continued driving the car when the oil light was screaming at you.
There's a distinction between the "oil level" warning that appears in your EDU -- that's based on the oil level sensor -- and the red oil can symbol in the pictogram -- based on the oil pressure switch. If that light comes on, stop the car immediately.
Something caused a drop in oil pressure, so even with plenty of oil in the sump, it wasn't getting where it needed to go. While you can't be certain it's the oil pump per se, you probably CAN be reasonably sure you've got ruined bearings at this point.
Seems it's likely time for a new engine. Although sometimes a rebuild is possible after this kind of oil starvation, your particular engine is a cheap item on the used market and would be a better way to go. Installation costs may run high enough that you might prefer to replace the car altogether, given that similar vintage 9000s can probably be found in the $1500-$2000 range (or about what a shop would probably charge to replace the engine).
Sorry for your trouble!
