Riddle me this SaabMan??

The car is a 1995 9K CSE turbo. On Monday night I drove about 40 miles to pick up my son from school. I arrived about 1/2 hour early so I shut the car off and listened to the radio. As my son approached I started the car and it started acting very strange so I shut it off. I tried to restart but the battery didn't have a enough juice to start it. I called AAA. I got a jump start but once he disconnected the cables I watched the voltage drop until it shut off. It was obvious the alternator was dead. I got it towed home and put my charger on it. Upon arriving home yesterday I started the car and the display gave me 13.8-14.0 volts. Hmmmmmmm! Well, I had no intention of driving it very far like this but it was very cold and my back-up car (95 900S) refused to start. I decided to give it a go and drive the car the 12.5 miles to work. It was dark so I had the lights on all of the way in. I had my eyes glued to the voltage display and never saw a single dip below 13.5V. Can anyone give me a clue what happened or might be happening???
