The only technical advantage I can think of is that a sedan can be made more rigid, and god knows it's popular for companies to site that their car is 5 million percent more rigid than the previous model. But honestly, I'm more than happy to give up some rigidity for hatchback utility.
I've driven both the sedan and hatch version of the Mazda6 and couldn't tell a diference in how the cars drove. The hatch version is very well done and very subtle visually from the sedan - I can't see why anyone would buy the sedan, but you can guess which version is far more popular. I think a Mazdaspeed6 would be a strong 9000 successor, but alas, it's only available in sedan form.
