The bright orange, rectangular lampcontrol relay in the fuse box under the hood is responsible for telling the pictogram which lights are out. It's not an ECU so much as a simple relay. It is also responsible for properly relaying which lights are on, as well, since a bad lampcontrol relay will cause the wrong lights to go on or prevent them from coming on entirely (ask me how I know).
If you're seeing a failure on the pictogram of a light that's still on, check the actual bulb fixture itself. If the plastic mount holding the bulb in is loose or broken, it can trigger the lampcontrol module to signal that the bulb is dead. I had this happen to me as well but fixed it with a small piece of electrical tape to hold the mount together.
