could be the starter Posted by Henry Helfman [Email] (#787) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Henry Helfman) on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 13:51:40 In Reply to: Replacing starter on '96 9000?, Christine, Thu, 15 Jan 2009 14:42:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
People's description of the definition of an engine "turning over" seems to vary from person to person which can often cause confusion when trying to diagnose a no-start condition from words alone. I personally try to avoid using that phrase when asking for or providing advise.
3 days before I crashed my 95, I finally replaced an ailing starter with a $30 junk yard unit. In the weeks prior it had a problem that had been getting progressively worse when cranking. The symptom was an intermittent grinding sound while attempting to crank the engine in addition to the starter randomly free spinning (momentarily disengaged to the flywheel) As it was getting worse I would only start the car when I left for work, and left work to go home in fear of being stranded. When I removed it the cast aluminum casing around nose had been badly cracked and the outer bearing was not grounded. Removing/replacing the unit ended up being a quick easy job (as Yaofeng and others advised) The most useful advise is to have a good selection of sockets and extensions. It took a moment to realize one bolt should be accessed directly and the other should be accessed with an extension from above the transmission bellhousing.
