A 95 540i6 that is. I've been on record saying I don't think it's faster in passing maneuvers, but if you hang on until upwards of 3500 rpm it'll kill just about anything, Aero included.
But that's the rub, and why a 9000 turbo is so very hard to beat, because the power comes on down low (where you need it) and when you're not into the pedal it doesn't get 19 MPG. Plus you can fit actual adults in the rear seats, and their stuff in the hatch.
On the other hand, there's absolutely no way on God's green earth that a 9000 will ever handle like a BMW. None. Zero. Zilch. And the BMW transmission doesn't come apart on a whim. Of course, for 60-odd-grand new, it better handle better! And I've found it easier to work on the BMWs than the Saabs, mainly because the engine isn't transversely installed and crammed into quite so tight a space. But I haven't done as much "deep" mechanical work, like Yaofeng has, who feels the opposite (he has a 525 and 540; I've had a 535 prior to the 540).
If I had it to do over again though I'd have stayed in the 9000s because they are still the most all-around perfect car for my needs. And God knows they are inexpensive to buy. And once you get into 9-3 and 9-5 territory, I think the Saab well of goodness runs dry, and you pretty much have to go BMW for reliability reasons.
