The test connector should be in the same place - on the left side (driver's side, LHD), right by the metal name plate.
Open loop is when the control schedules fuel based on engine speed, throttle position, airflow, but not the O2 sensor. The control is open loop when the O2 sensor is cold, or under moderate or hard acceleration.
The CEL is the engine control's way of saying something is wrong. It can be anything, including a temperature sensor that is out of range. The engine control will only run continuously open loop if the O2 sensor is consistently out of range. So yes, it would be specific O2 sensor codes.
