I clunkered my '97 CSE last summer for a '09 Subaru Imprezza 5 speed. Have 18K on it now. Gettting what I consider good MPG. 30-33 which is much better than EPA and also better than any 9K I have ever owned. Ride and handling are acceptable. Road noise and seats however are not. I am a large boy however, 240 lbs. so someone smaller may find the seat OK. It supposedly has a 5 star crash rating but compered to the solid feeling of a 9K, I think they must have tested the Imprezza against speeding skateboards. All in all a good little econobox and the AWD feature is something I would NOT be without in such a car here in Vermont. With 4 studded Nokia's last winter the Subi was ALMOST as good as a 9K wearing the same rubber. Really, the only reason the 9K went was the rust it had made it impractical to dump in the needed suspension $$. The motor, with 247K, was perfect. If your daughter's 9K is realitively rust free, I would consider doing all the needed maintaince before she goes and keep her in a 9K Saab for safety sake.
