you have once again got me thinking. (You're good at that, BTW).
I'm figuring used parts for the A/C and I'm assuming worst case of replacing condenser, compressor, evaporator, evap/drier cannister, hoses, fan, etc. All or mostly used. And it does need a heater core. Very definitely. I'll wind up paying for some work, which drives up the cost...
I can replace the heater core and the parts for the A/C but don't have the knowledge or tools to get it working and troubleshoot any bugs. So someone gets to do that. My time is as limited as cash, so I might have the tech up where she is at school swap the A/C parts, as he has a low hourly rate. And he may be able to do that before she comes home. Am working on that angle.
So then it's other stuff, like the water pump (it's pretty noisy) the serp belt, pulleys and tensioner (all due and I have the parts), and I think it needs a crank pulley. Not sure, but I think so. I can see rubber "strings" sort of peeling off it. Not sure I can do that one (no air tools).
Happily, I checked the records from the PO and the fuel pump, DI and blower motor are about 5 years old and only have about 35K on them. I'll give her a spare DI, but those should all be good.
I can swap cars a few days once she's home. She knows she has to treat my car well!! She learned on it, so she's (mostly) OK with the 5-speed.
With you, Bill, plus Street and jdlincoln all telling me the same thing, it does make sense. Was starting to think the same thing when I saw your post earlier today, so I know I'm not totally crazy. And she does love her old 9K.
