Buy a quality brand, change frequently Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Thu, 3 Jun 2010 14:22:09 In Reply to: need advise on good auto trans fluid, bern, Thu, 3 Jun 2010 08:31:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you have no service records, then change it 3 times. Drive it about 20 miles between changes 1-2 and again between changes 2-3. For safety's sake let it cool off between changes. Change the filter on the 3rd change. About 4.5 quarts per change if you drive the right front onto a couple of boards. A triple change replaces 87.5% of the ATF.
Every brand is an experiment of sorts. GM hasn't licensed the production of Dexron III since the end of 2006. If a brand says it is Dexron III compatible, you have to take their word for it. That is true whether it is conventional or synthetic. GM says Dexron VI is backward compatible, but I don't know if anyone has tried it; I wouldn't want to be the first.
If you like synthetic, then do not fear. People have been using synthetics like Mobil 1 long enough that there would be horror stories on this board if any harm was caused. If you like conventional, then that is fine also.
Heat is the enemy of ATF. Change more frequently if you run in a hot climate or do any towing. Rule of thumb is do a single change every 15,000 with synthetic or every 10,000 with conventional.
