timing chain wear Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 07:48:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm doing the HG on my 97 CSE and I've got it mostly apart. I measured the plunger on my timing chain tensioner and it measured out at around 13 MM. I believe the spec is 11 MM before it needs replacement. Is the wear normally due to timing chain guide wear or timing chain stretch? I'm sure it's some of both but will replacing the chain normally get it back in spec? Rolling a new chain in is fairly straightforward. Changing the guides requires the removal of the timing cover which is a fair amount of additional work. Of course once you're in there the scope of work grows into balance shaft chains, sprockets and a bunch of other stuff. I should mention that the car has about 165,000 on the clock. I spoke to the local indy today and he said he normally charges around $750 for labor (around 10 hrs) to do a HG job. I'm cheap but I think that's probably a pretty good deal if you don't have the time (or desire) to DIY it.
