Low RPM, lumpy idle and stalling with AC on Posted by Kevin M [Email] (#1193) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Kevin M) on Sun, 10 Oct 2010 19:35:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1990, 9KT, engine, 298000 miles
Like to have AC here in south Mississippi, but reverted to turning it off if in stop and go traffic or sitting at a light because the car will stall.
Over the last 6 months or so in a feeble attempt to resolve this issue I have:
Checked for vacuum leaks (car pulls 17-18" at idle. Replaced all vac lines with silicone several years ago.
Even though it had no sign of failure, replaced the FPR-after 300K, why not?
New IAC
Cleaned AMM.
Replaced a dead O2 sensor last week. When I found this, I thought I had a Eureka moment. It helped smooth the idle somewhat, but the car still dies when the AC is on.
Is there any signaling that comes from the ACC that informs the ECU to increase idle speed to accommodate the excess load from the compressor? Or is this solely addressed by the IAC?
BTW the IAC is working. I tested the IAC by restricting the air flow passed to the TB. The idle dropped when restricted, upon release the idle picked up to ~1000RPM then settled back to ~850 (Thanks, Gene).
Sitting in the drive tonight, turned the AC on and the idle dropped from 850 to ~550, but adding the load from the power steering pump I drove the idle speed down below 500 and an subsequent stall.
Have not checked vac fittings or injectors with propane for really small leaks. I also, need to back-probe the O2 output to see what the O2 says the situation is.
I have not had the injectors cleaned or tested, I have run some Techron thru it in the last 8 months or so.
Other than cleaning the AMM, it has not been touched. It is not adjustable but the last time I checked, the resistance was in spec.
That's about it. Pretty frustrating- the only time in over 40 years of Saabing, I'm considering giving it up- Naw, as ARI says, "Resistance is futile!"
So, I need the gurus to tell me what I'm missing.
All the best,
Kev
