bearings DO damage with hammer blows and it doesn't require much impact at all. Possibly you have been lucky and the damage has been within the 'safety redundancies' of the design. Bearing balls/races actually contact on very very tiny surfaces. Any impact forces cause dents and cratering .. it doesn't take much stretch of one's imagination to visualize this as 'not good'.
I've damaged/ruined pricey, hi grade bearings (moto) by incautious seating of the things. A lesson, that once hard learned.. won't be knowingly repeated.
Thank you for the thought though.. I'm not ungrateful for your advise.
