I've done it a couple times and written about it on this BB. Its not hard, Erikksons(sp) can set you up with the parts. The main parts needed are the rubber square section seal ring(s), only one of the 2 same size rubber rings goes bad, and a gasket for the cover. I've done it without a new flanged cap screw($$$) that is staked over to lock it in place. There is also a metal hook ring that don't show much of any wear. To go all out on the parts, there are 2 rubber rings, a metal hook ring, flanged cap screw, and cover gasket.
Going in, remove the left inner fender liner, 13 #7 Torx cap screws and cover, then undo the 36mm cap screw on the end of the shaft with the tranny in park. For a better grip on the shallow headed cap screw, grind the hex end of a 36mm socket until the hex portion is fully flush with the end of the socket. Then remove the gear and carefully remove the bearing race with a puller if necessary. Note the position of a washer and sleeve on the shaft and remove along with the governor.
The failed black rubber seal ring will be in pieces. Carefully replace the seal rings, I wrap tape around the ring lands to reduce the chance of damaging the rings and marring the land edges. Let the rings rest after installation for a half hour or so, and put the governor and bearing race in the freezer to help the rings shrink back to shape after being stretched over the lands. Lube the seal surface of the governor and install it and the bearing race while cold. The manual says to heat the transmission housing to help fit the bearing race but a cold race goes in ok. Tap on the bearing race to make sure it is seated squarely. Install the sleeve, washer, and gear. Tighten the cap screw to 120 lbft, and install the cover with 10 lbft on the screws.
I’m convinced that driving in reverse a long distance and/or fast fries the rubber ring. Do not use throttle or spin the wheels when in reverse, doing so increases the transmission main pressure and the pressure on the rubber seal.
I have the shop manual for the tranny but the scanner has died. We need to have an archive on Saabnet for this stuff.
