With today’s engines and fuel combustion deposits are minimal. In the days when lead was used in gasoline, appreciable deposits accumulated in the combustion chamber, on valves and spark plugs. Most modern engines burn little oil, so carbon deposits from burned oil are very light. A properly running engine will have very little in the way of combustion deposits, and typically not require cleaning.
Introducing water into the intake of a hot engine running at high idle was a common low cost attempt o clean heavily carboned engines. Water is introduced slowly, so it rapidly changes to steam, which cleans by thermo shock and scouring action. To much liquid water entering the combustion chamber may foul the spark plugs and if enough enters cause hydraulic lock.
One side effect of cleaning combustion chambers is lowering the compression ratio. This along with cleaning the back side of the valves may allow slightly more fuel and air into the combustion chamber for a little more power at full throttle.
