Ah, the old hot rodders trick. The first time you see someone do it, it will scare the heck out of you!

Back in the pre-fuel injection days, fuel wouldn't burn as thoroughly, and especially on a poorly tuned car, you could get a lot of carbon buildup in the cylinders. This would increase your compression and alter the dynamics of the combustion chamber. Then as now, you'd get pinging in your engine, except now your Saab would adjust by lowering boost. These days with fuel injection and high detergent gas it's much, much less likely to be an issue, but still something to keep in mind if you have a hard time figuring out why trionic keeps dialing back your boost. If you ever look at the engine of a car that head a head gasket leak into a cylinder, you'll see that one cylinder's piston top and vales are squeaky clean, and that's the theory here.

If you do want to give it a shot, use a long length of one of the small vacuum hoses hooked directly the intake manifold. Hold the throttle at about 1500 RPM and slowly introduce the hose to the water. You'll quickly get a feel for how much water to introduce. Expect a lot of steam from the tailpipe and a rough running engine while you do it. As long as your even somewhat careful you won't have any issues with hydrolock (I think what you mean by increase in compression) and any removed carbon will go out the exhaust. Just don't expect it to be a miracle cure, but you won't hurt anything.
