The task of removing the timing cover without removing the head is a mystical art. Most attempts end with damaged head gaskets, so you might want to re-evaluate your options lest you end up having to pull the head anyway. On the other hand, nothing ventured nothing gained.
There are indeed two bolts passing from the sump to the timing cover, as Gene points out. And two between the head and the timing cover too, if memory serves; don't forget those.
If you're confident after removal that you've preserved the head gasket, a common approach to reinstallation (another gasket killer) is to freeze the timing cover to shrink it and make it easier to install. This has had a low success rate in the past but give it a try.
Good luck and let us know how you get on!
