So I decide to take my wife out to early dinner for her birthday. Driving down the road aero must have hit a rock thought nothing of it. About 10 miles latter getting close to my destination at a stop sign I hear the horrible distinct sound of a rapping engine(NO OIL)and Idle starts to get a little jumpy. Shut the engine off, checked oil… not a drop! Dropped down to witness a horribly smashed up oil filter with a huge gouge on it(car must have lost all the oil within 2 miles of impact). Tried to turn her over and hear terrible gridding sounds. Wife comments…you see! “This car breaks down all the time”.

Tow her home (car and wife), slapped a new filter and 5 quarts of oil. Start her up and hear the usual metallic sounds of an engine that has been starved of oil but settles down to the typical faint ticking of the B232 engine after 20 minutes...Big Big sight of relief from me!

Why didn't the oil light come on? Did the ignition and dashboard lights check “burned light bulb?”
After closer inspection it’s apparent the oil filter and an oil line are at same level as the suspension cross member. I’m seriously considering fabricating some type of shield to protect from direct impacts. I’m sure in the past other folks have found themselves in a similar situation. I don’t know whether the engine sustained significant metal wear but the new oil looks clean with no metal anything in it and the engine runs well with no knocking sounds even after getting on it pretty hard(I think it was caught right on time).

Conclusion:

The B232 engine is very robust.

Happy saabing everyone.
