That's not exactly a strong endorsement of it as a quality procedure.
But I can't personally see any harm in it. You're driving the spring down very quickly - - something that happens to it thousands of times inside one minute of running, multiplied by years and years of driving.
The force of the socket is on the rim of the retainer, which sits against the top coil of the spring, so it's only being pushed on.
The retainer drops down away from the keepers, which from the general vibration I guess pop out of their snugly machined slots in the valve stem, which doesn't get touched by anything.
I'm gonna drop by an automotive machine shop and ask if they do this, when customers aren't looking.
