Reminds me of my hitch concerns a bit...
On my '94 the hitch sounds like yours but mine lined right up.
As for the height - for me it is good for the unloaded trailer to be higher at the hitch so it can go down a bit when loaded and my drawbar is in the 'up' position for that reason.
(May I presume you have the smaller (1 1/4"?) Reese or box style receiver ?)
That is what mine has and I just went to Kmart and bought a generic Reese-style drawbar and ball for mine.
I see you solved the wiring already - good work !
One good solution involves using good diodes to go from the European type wiring to plain/simple American 4-wire style and that is how mine is done.
