This is one area where computer have really made a massive improvement. It's much easier to calculate the physics of chassis rigidity, which is pretty complicated stuff, on a computer than trying it out manually, which involves a lot of guess work and assumptions. I believe the 9k platform was one of the earliest to involve extensive computer designs, but the industry has obviously come a long way since then. The biggest payoff is the ride and NVH improvements in modern cars, with better handling being a nice benefit.
And yes, the hatch plays a big role in rigidity. Imagine how much a big metal bar through the hatch would increase rigidity. If you've ever seen the hatch in a Nissan 350Z, you'll see that car designers agree on this too. Personally, I'm happy to give up some rigidity for the versatility of the hatch though!
