wrecker engines in the past (not saab though) It's All to easy to be cheated, I was. a couple of times.. sigh.
It's basically a luck and faith adventure.
Every Wrecker claims theirs was driven on Sundays by a little old lady .. as if. A reputable business is better though.
Having said that, a couple few years back I was hunting for a replacement Honda unit (younger Son) Went to a V large JDM importer of engines. Stuck my finger in virtually Every 'possible' Engine there.. at least fifty . Every one had black oily ex ports, revealing that they were Worn out Crap.
Completely astonished me as to why? someone would bother to transport utter Junk across the Pacific. Clearly there must be busloads or Naive buyers. Caveat Emptor in all things, our Moderne World indeed.
Better wreckers will have done a comp and leakdown test... preferably when the customer is watching.
But as Saabs are by now, low value/profit parts, likely few will humor you in this..
Removing a Main and or a rod end bearing to look at it's condition as a fairly good determinate of overall engine shape, is ideal.. Bit of work and a PITA though. Valve cover removal is easiest but gives least info, however with a Comp test as well it's certainly helpful.
Check Exhaust output, be it Ex ports or end of manifold where the Turbo bolts on. It should NOT be black /oily... period.
