The machinist found that the bearing had slipped and was overlapped. He measured the crank and found it within specs to justify a regrind. These people gained my trust on an earlier successful rebuild on a land rover- my first attempt at doing something more complicated than brakes. That truck is going strong after 3 years, just making a 1400 mile trip to Florida.
I soaked the block with simple green and then spent 2 hours using a pressure washer on it. the narrow stream was shot into every oil passage. The balance shafts were taken out as well. I will brush them out too.
I dropped off the head this morning they will pressure test it as well as inspect it before doing any work on it- I thought the valves from the loose piston would be bad, but will find out for sure.
The machine shop will help me with the plastigage when reassembling to ensure the tolerances on the crank are perfect.
I am budget conscious, but I expect this will end up costing about one thousand when all is done. In return, I should have an engine in great condition. ( a junkyard one would cost from $400 to $1400, with a 6 month guaruntee) which would really be five months when you subtract the time it will take me to get it back in!
